My mom always told me that “if you can read, you can cook.” Whenever she would get a new cookbook, she would open it up and read it from cover to cover. Just listening to her read the recipes would make our mouths water with anticipation of what she would cook next. And she was an amazing cook. Well I am an amazing reader but I have turned into a really lazy cook. Fast or frozen, whatever was the easiest, has been my recipe for far too long. My mom died recently and as I stood in front of her bookshelves filled with cookbooks from all over the world, I was flooded with all of those wonderful memories. So one by one I am reading them from cover to cover. And pretty soon my family’s mouths will be watering with anticipation of what I can cook up. I think mom would be proud that I am not only continuing my reading, but cooking for my family once again.

Jim is a true water baby. Get him near the beach and he heads right for the surf. On a recent trip to Ocean Beach, he was the first one in and the last one out of the water. June 2011

I have so many fond memories of the cabin at Lake Gregory. But the best ones are of the times Todd and I spent together fishing. We always felt so proud that we could catch enough for us all to eat for dinner. Good times. 1958

One 4th of July, Michael was getting the BBQ all ready. Jimmy was fascinated with the entire process of putting in the briquettes and adding the lighting fluid. Once the match was lit and it burst into flames, Jimmy was so excited he asked “Are we gonna have a campfire?” Fortunately this was all caught on film AND video. Now whenever we have a family BBQ, this classic line is always said!
